How to Plan your jungle safari

A jungle safari is one of those holidays that is the chance of a lifetime.  It is quite an unusual holiday although it is now growing in popularity.  The chance to see animals in their own habitats is a chance that should not be missed and there are jungle safaris all over the world for you to choose from.

Choose a destination

If you are looking for a luxury jungle holiday then you can try somewhere like Botswana.  There are plenty of chic safari camps to choose from and there is some great wildlife here for you to see.  If you want a family safari then a top destination is Kenya where many of the camps have private family accommodation and varying entertainments for children.

Why not consider Madagascar?  Here there are plenty of options for jungle safaris here and there are also great family-friendly facilities.  If you want to see mountain gorillas at close quarters then safaris in Uganda or Rwanda might be more your style, especially if you also want to spend some time in Kenya or Tanzania.

The rainforests of Brazil and Ecuador are another option if you want a jungle safari but Costa Rica is also a popular destination.  From South America you are also well-placed to explore areas such as the Galapagos Islands.

Packing the right things

If you are heading off to a jungle safari you need to make sure that you take the right things with you.   If you go without the correct gear you will find the conditions a little more difficult to bear.  The first thing you need to do is make sure that you take clothes for your jungle safari that have moisture wicking qualities.  This will help to reduce sweat levels and will be fairly light to wear at the same time.

The next essential is good quality walking boots.  You don’t need heavy boots, but something that is waterproof and that can protect the feet and ankles.  You will be doing plenty of walking in them so make sure that you take the time to walk them in before you embark on your trip.

Some trips will require you to wear leech socks, particularly if you are heading into Borneo.  As you walk through undergrowth you can easily become covered in leeches and the socks can help to protect you from this.  However, these are not the only pests that you need to consider.  Mosquitos are a real nuisance and you will be needing repellent as this works on other pests too.  Make sure that any bare skin has the repellent applied to it.  One tip is to put some on your boots as this will help to stop the pests crawling up.

Finally, another essential item for your jungle safari is a hat.  Avoid a cap because the peak can be a bit of a nuisance but something to protect you from the sun and to help when you are passing through the foliage is a good idea.
